Fugate always maintained that Starkweather was holding her hostage by threatening to kill her family in Lincoln, Neb., and claimed she was unaware they were already dead. There was nothing unusual in her actions, except for watching the waitress, Anderson wrote.
Starkweather and Fugate left Tate s Garage but returned again about 5:30 that afternoon, pulling up to the gas pumps and buying $1.40 in gas. Fugate was noticed to be with him and they both just sat inside the car while at the gas station.
